Editor's Note

Editor's Note No. 1: Why a software company is starting a newspaper.

Nobody counts what dispensary websites do to their visitors. We scan them for a living, so we are going to publish the count, in the open, every quarter.

Cartoon of the budtender shoveling stamped cards into a boiler-shaped machine of gears and gauges while two customers drop in their own cards; hoses run to a mailbox, a register, a laptop and a blank billboard as the auditor reads a gauge.
Six desks, one question: what happened before the visitor said yes?

Headset publishes what sells. Leafly counts the jobs. Nobody publishes what a dispensary website does to the people who visit it: which tags load before anyone is asked, how many visitors leave without a name, and which stores are getting sued over it.

We happen to measure exactly that. The Sell More Cannabis scan loads a homepage in a real browser, watches what fires before a visitor can answer, reads the privacy policy, and models the traffic. Every store that runs the scan gets its own report, privately. Run enough of them and a picture of the whole industry appears. That picture is the Record.

What we will publish

Six desks, each with a plain job.

  • Missing Persons Desk covers the 98 in 100 who browse the menu and leave without a name.
  • The Docket tracks the privacy and consent suits, from the filings, in plain language.
  • The Leak Index is the quarterly count: what fires before consent, by state and by platform.
  • Shop Floor is playbooks for the stack you already run and for the big weekends.
  • Staff Cartoon is one panel a week.
  • Editor’s Note is this: the founders building the thing in public, circulation numbers included.

The rules we set for ourselves

Aggregates only. No store’s result goes on a page unless the store asks for it. Modeled numbers are labeled modeled, every time. Every stat carries its sample size, its date, and a link to how it was made. Allegations on the Docket are allegations. Nothing here is legal advice.

And one more, because a privacy publication that leaks would be a joke: this site asks before anything runs. Scan it and see.

Where we are today

Twenty-five sites in the first scan set, drawn from eight cities in eight legal states. A small set, so the numbers are directional. Circulation: zero. First edition of The Late Edition goes out Thursday. If you run a dispensary site, the fastest way to be part of the count is to run the scan.
