Missing Persons Desk

Bulletin No. 1: 96 in 100 dispensary sites fire a tag before anyone can answer.

Twenty-five dispensary homepages, loaded once each as a first-time visitor. Twenty-four had already sent something to someone before the visitor could say a word.

Last seen: the menu page. Time: the moment it loaded.

In the first Sell More Cannabis scan set, 24 of 25 dispensary homepages fired at least one tag before a visitor could answer any question. The median site loaded three. Only nine of the 25 showed a consent banner on first view, and six of those had already fired tags by the time the banner appeared.

The scan opens the homepage in a real browser as a first-time visitor: no cookies, no prior answer. Every request the browser makes to another company before any consent answer is recorded. A tag manager counts. An analytics tag counts. An ad pixel counts. A session recorder counts. The age gate does not count as an answer, because “Are you 21?” is not “May we remember you?”

What the 25 looked like

  • 36% showed a consent banner on first view.
  • 16% loaded an ad pixel before consent.
  • 24% started a session recorder before anyone agreed.
  • 12% had no privacy policy linked from the homepage, and another 20% had one older than two years.
  • 88% asked the age question before the menu.

Why it belongs on the Missing Persons Desk

Every one of those tags learned that a visitor arrived. None of them told the store who it was. That is the shape of the problem: the site leaks the visit and keeps nothing. The banner that asks first reverses both halves. Nothing fires until the visitor says yes, and every yes comes back as a name, an email, and a receipt.

Twenty-five sites is a small set. The count grows every quarter, and the method is public. If you want to know where your own site stands, the scan is free and nobody is contacted.
